For years, Jeaane Arbuthnot and I, the non-Haddamites, had been in social situations where the talk was "Remember when......? with bits and snippets of stories we'd never heard; people, places, incidents foreign to us, the aliens. (Haddam is VERY insular, you must admit.)
Discussing this led us to the conclusion another book should be written,
setting forth the facts as nearly as we could learn them. Hence, "Remember When".
This is a companion book to "Heritage", but that one
was completely factual, with everything true and provable in
city records and/or newspapers. This book is also intended to be factual, with stories from newspapers and books---but some comes from people's memories, and it is amazing how they vary or grow dim with the passage of time.
You may disagree with or disbelieve some of the stories herein. If you can prove them erroneous, let me know, please. Perhaps later, a supplement to this book can set the records straight.

Listing all those who helped would take too much space, but some were called upon more often than others: Dora Brown (and her books); Harold Congleton; Bob Novak (and his Clipper papers); Boliver Hyland, and Vernon Wranosky. Many contacts were made by phone and here in town I'm sure some people cringed when they saw me heading in their direction. To all---thank you.
And, of course, to Jeaane Arbuthnot, my partner in crime, who once more did all the proofreading for me, and who came up with ideas galore to keep my fingers busy at my typewriter. Special thanks to Janice Hardenburger for volunteering her time, efforts and computer to set this up for the printer. What a big help!. Some people have wondered aloud whether it was safe for me to write about some of these things. You be the judge and jury of this petty crime--and I hope the verdict is "Not Guilty--we enjoyed travelling back!"
